Girard Varsity, JV teams have successful road trip to Mercer

The Girard Varsity and JV teams had a successful road trip to Mercer on Saturday morning and afternoon. The teams faced Mercer and Maplewood in another tri-scrimmage, the last opportunity for the teams to prepare against an opponent before the season games begin.

In the opening 60-minute match against Maplewood, the varsity team went up 4-0 behind goals from Kelly Drushel (2), Sydney Dunn, and Danielle Ames. After a 30-minute half, varsity stepped off, while the JV team stepped on to play a mix between a Varsity and JV Maplewood team. They responded quite well, by scoring 2 more goals, which were scored by India Boderocco and Andi Pascuzzo. Overall, through a combination of the two teams, Girard defeated Maplewood 6-0.

In the second match against Mercer, the Girard team battled a tough 60-minutes to walk out with a 1-0 win, thanks to Taylor Shaw's header into the goal, to finish with two wins on the day. The JV then played a 30-minute game against a mixture of Varsity and JV Mercer players, coming up short on a defensive error, to lose 0-1 to the Mustangs.

The girls teams now have 2 more weeks of preparation before the season games begin, opening on Saturday, September 11th at Conneaut Valley. The girls will look to continue to push themselves at practices in order to make this a season to remember for Girard Girls Soccer.

Girard wins one, loses one in Tri-Scrimmage at home

The Girard girls played in a tri-scrimmage at Memorial Field on Saturday against Conneaut and Edgewood from Ohio. It was going to be the first true test to see where we stood and how we are doing. In the opening game of Girard v. Conneaut, Girard won 5-0 behind goals from Bekah Edder (3), Sydney Dunn, and Sam Lane, with Katy Rickard getting the shutout in net. In the second game, Edgewood defeated Conneaut 9-0. In the final game, Girard went up 1-0 behind a Kelly Drushel goal, but then we would allow three Edgewood goals, giving Edgewood the 3-1 victory. The Girard girls finished 1-1 on the day.

In the JV match, an early goal by Andi Pascuzzo gave Girard the lead over Edgewood, and behind a dominating second half, they would perserve that lead and walk to the win 1-0. Carly Phelps and Brittney Edwards combined for the shutout in goal.

Next up is a week full of practice next week, and then another tri-scrimmage at Mercer next Saturday, August 28th. Girard will play Maplewood from 11:30 to 1:00 pm, and then will play Mercer from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Each game will consist of three 30 minute periods, with varsity playing two and JV playing one period.
